€11,500 donation to Makarios Hospital

Cans For Kids on Thursday donated a Broadband Curved Array Transducer with PureWave Crystal Technology (foetal heart probe) worth €11,500 to the Paediatric Cardiology ward at the Makarios Hospital.

The equipment was officially handed over to the Minister of Health, Dr Androulla Agrotou, at a ceremony on the ward attended by medical staff and Cans For Kids’ President Olga Demetriades, who told the Minister how pleased she was that this latest donation took the total value of medical equipment given by Cans For Kids to the children’s wards at the hospital to over €260,000 – money raised by recycling aluminium cans.

In accepting the transducer, the Minister congratulated Cans For Kids for their tireless work in supporting the hospital for the last 22 years and thanked them for their significant contribution to improving the standard of medical care for children in Cyprus. She explained the significance of the equipment, which has already been used and identified 5 cases of congenital heart disease in foetuses.

Dr. Andreas Roussounides, Paediatric Cardiologist at the hospital, said two of the babies were sent to Israel for surgery as soon as they were born. “They are there now, and I’ve just heard that one of them is doing very much better after his operation”.
